शाह आलम द्वितीय (मूल नाम अली गौहर, कार्यकाल 1759-1806 ई.) के पिता आलमगीर द्वितीय की 1759 ई. में वजीर गाजीउद्दीन (इमाद-उल-मुल्क) ने हत्या करवा दी थी। उस समय अली गौहर बिहार में था। वजीर के भय और दिल्ली की दरबारी गुटबाजी के कारण वह 12 वर्षों तक दिल्ली नहीं लौट सका और 1765 से 1771 ई. तक इलाहाबाद में अंग्रेजों के संरक्षण (पेंशनभोगी) में रहा। अंततः जनवरी 1772 ई. में मराठा सरदार महादजी सिंधिया की सहायता से वह दिल्ली के लालकिले में प्रवेश कर सका।
Shah Alam II (Ali Gauhar, reigned 1759–1806 CE) was in Bihar when his father Alamgir II was assassinated in 1759 CE by the ruthless Wazir Ghazi-ud-din (Imad-ul-Mulk). Threatened by the Wazir, Shah Alam II was barred from entering Delhi and lived under British protection at Allahabad from 1765 to 1771 CE. In January 1772 CE, he was finally escorted back and restored to Delhi by the Maratha statesman Mahadji Shinde.
