Following the death of Aurangzeb on 3 March 1707 CE, his 63-year-old eldest surviving son Prince Muazzam (Shah Alam I) emerged victorious in the war of succession (Battle of Jajau) defeating his brothers Azam and Kam Bakhsh, and ascended the Mughal throne under the title 'Bahadur Shah I'. He ruled from 1707 to 1712 CE. Contemporary historian Khafi Khan dubbed him 'Shah-i-Bekhabar' (the Careless King) due to his administrative indifference.
