बंदा बहादुर का मूल नाम लक्ष्मण देव (Lachhman Dev) अथवा लच्छन देव था। वे कश्मीर के पुंछ जिले के भारद्वाज गोत्र के राजपूत परिवार से थे। वैरागी सन्यासी बनने के उपरांत वे 'माधो दास' कहलाए। 1708 ई. में नांदेड़ में गुरु गोविंद सिंह ने उन्हें सिख धर्म में दीक्षित कर 'बंदा सिंह बहादुर' नाम दिया तथा मुगलों के विरुद्ध पंजाब में सिख सेना का नेतृत्व सौंपा।
The original name of Banda Bahadur was Lachhman Dev (Lakshman Dev). Born into a Rajput family of the Bharadwaj gotra in Poonch (Kashmir), he became an ascetic under the name 'Madho Das'. In 1708 CE at Nanded, Guru Gobind Singh initiated him into Sikhism, bestowed upon him the name 'Banda Singh Bahadur', and entrusted him with the military leadership of the Sikhs in Punjab against Mughal tyranny.
