During the Mughal period, the head of the military department was the 'Mir Bakhshi'. He was responsible for presenting candidates for appointments and promotions in the imperial mansabdari hierarchy, inspecting cavalry troops and horse-branding (Dagh system), and issuing pay certificates known as 'Sarkhat' on which the Diwan disbursed salaries.
