The first armed conflict between the Mughals and the British East India Company took place in 1686 AD during the reign of Aurangzeb (Anglo-Mughal War / Child's War). When the English plundered Hooghly in Bengal, Aurangzeb ordered imperial forces under Subahdar Shaista Khan to drive Job Charnock and the English out of Hooghly. The English factories were seized, and the British were forced to sue for peace, paying an indemnity of 1.5 lakh rupees to regain trading privileges.
