In early 1665 AD, Aurangzeb dispatched a massive imperial army under Mirza Raja Jai Singh I of Amber to suppress Shivaji. A master strategist, Jai Singh laid siege to the fortress of Purandar and encircled Shivaji's territories. Recognizing the tactical necessity, Shivaji negotiated and signed the historic Treaty of Purandar in June 1665 with Raja Jai Singh. Under the treaty, Shivaji surrendered 23 of his 35 forts to the Mughals and agreed to send his son Sambhaji to the imperial court with a mansab of 5,000.
