औरंगजेब के चौथे पुत्र शहजादा मुहम्मद अकबर ने जनवरी, 1681 ई. में अपने पिता के विरुद्ध विद्रोह का बिगुल फूंक दिया। अकबर अपने पिता की संकीर्ण एवं धर्मांध नीति से असंतुष्ट था। मेवाड़ के महाराणा राजसिंह तथा मारवाड़ के वीर दुर्गादास राठौर ने उसे समर्थन दिया और उसे भारत का बादशाह घोषित करने में सहायता की। दुर्गादास ने अकबर को सुरक्षित निकाल कर दक्षिण में मराठा छत्रपति संभाजी के दरबार में पहुंचाया। बाद में अकबर फारस भाग गया, जहां 1704 ई. के आसपास उसकी मृत्यु हुई।
Aurangzeb's fourth son, Prince Muhammad Akbar, rebelled against his father in January 1681 AD. Disillusioned with his father's orthodox and intolerant policies in Rajputana, Akbar formed an alliance with Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar and the celebrated Rathore chieftain Durgadas of Marwar, proclaiming himself emperor. Durgadas escorted Akbar safely to the Deccan court of Maratha Chhatrapati Sambhaji. Akbar later escaped to Persia, where he died in exile around 1704 AD.
