हुमायूं की मृत्यु के समय अकबर पंजाब में सिकंदर सूर के विरुद्ध युद्ध में व्यस्त था। उस अवसर पर बैरम खां उसके संरक्षक के रूप में कार्य कर रहा था। हुमायूं की मृत्यु की सूचना मिलने पर पंजाब में गुरदासपुर जिले के निकट कलानौर नामक स्थान पर 14 फरवरी, 1556 को ईंटों के चबूतरे पर अकबर को मुगल बादशाह घोषित किया गया। उस समय अकबर की आयु 14 वर्ष से कम (लगभग 13 वर्ष 4 माह) थी।
