The Qutb Minar was initiated by Qutbuddin Aibak in honour of the Sufi saint Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (completing the base storey). Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish added three more storeys, bringing it to four storeys. During the reign of Firoz Shah Tughlaq, lightning damaged the fourth storey; Firoz Shah repaired it and added a fifth storey. Later, Sikandar Lodi also repaired its upper storeys. Sultan Alauddin Khalji made no contribution to the construction of Qutb Minar (he merely began constructing a rival, larger 'Alai Minar' nearby, which was abandoned after his death).
