A grand confederacy of the Deccan Sultanates—Bijapur, Ahmadnagar, Golconda, and Bidar (Berar notably stayed out)—decisively defeated the army of the Vijayanagara Empire. At that time, actual power resided with the de facto regent Rama Raya, who was captured and beheaded in the battle, following which the imperial capital was sacked and ruined.
