15वीं शताब्दी में विजयनगर साम्राज्य की राजधानी में जल संकट के समाधान तथा कृषि विस्तार के उद्देश्य से संगम वंशीय शासक देवराय प्रथम (1406–1422 ई.) ने लगभग 1410 ई. में तुंगभद्रा नदी पर एक विशाल बाँध निर्मित कराया। वहाँ से राजधानी नगर तक लगभग 24 किमी लंबी नहर एवं कुल्या (aqueduct) का निर्माण कराया गया। इसके अतिरिक्त उसने हरिद्रा नदी पर भी एक बाँध बनवाया था।
In the early 15th century, the Sangama dynasty ruler Devaraya I (reigned 1406–1422 AD) constructed a massive barrage/dam across the Tungabhadra River around 1410 AD to overcome water scarcity in the capital and expand irrigation. From this dam, he engineered a 24-kilometre-long canal and aqueduct channel directly into the royal city. He also built another dam across the Haridra River for irrigation purposes.
