विजयनगर साम्राज्य की स्थापना हरिहर तथा बुक्का ने 1336 ई. में की थी। उनके पिता संगम के नाम पर उनका वंश 'संगम वंश' कहलाया। हरिहर और बुक्का पहले काम्पिली राज्य में मंत्री थे। जब मुहम्मद बिन तुगलक ने काम्पिली को जीता, तो उसने इन दोनों भाइयों को बंदी बनाकर दिल्ली लाया और उन्हें इस्लाम में धर्मान्तरित कर दिया। बाद में दक्षिण में विद्रोह दबाने के लिए उन्हें भेजा गया, जहाँ वे प्रसिद्ध संत एवं विद्वान माधव विद्यारण्य तथा उनके भाई सायण के प्रभाव में आकर पुनः हिंदू धर्म में दीक्षित हुए और 1336 ई. में स्वतंत्र विजयनगर साम्राज्य की स्थापना की।
The Vijayanagara Empire was established in 1336 AD by two brothers, Harihara I and Bukka Raya I. Named after their father Sangama, the dynasty came to be known as the 'Sangama Dynasty'. Originally, Harihara and Bukka served as ministers in the kingdom of Kampili. When Muhammad bin Tughlaq conquered Kampili, he took them as prisoners to Delhi and forced them to convert to Islam. Later, when rebellions erupted in the Deccan, they were sent south by the Sultan. There, under the spiritual influence of sage Vidyaranya (Madhavacharya) and his brother Sayana, they reconverted to Hinduism and founded the independent Vijayanagara Empire on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River in 1336 AD.
