In 1504 AD, Sultan Sikandar Lodi founded the city of Agra on the banks of the Yamuna River to maintain strategic control over the Rajput chieftains of Rajasthan and oversee riverine trade routes. In 1506 AD, he transferred the capital of the Sultanate from Delhi to Agra. He also instituted the standard land measurement unit 'Gaj-i-Sikandari'.
