इल्तुतमिश (1211–1236 ई.) ने दिल्ली को सल्तनत की राजधानी के रूप में स्थापित किया। इससे पूर्व कुतुबुद्दीन ऐबक ने लाहौर से ही शासन संचालित किया था। इल्तुतमिश ने ही भारत में सल्तनत काल में सर्वप्रथम शुद्ध अरबी सिक्के चलाए। उसने चाँदी का टंका (175 ग्रेन) और ताँबे का जीतल प्रचलित किया तथा सिक्कों पर टकसाल का नाम अंकित करवाने की परंपरा शुरू की।
Iltutmish (1211–1236 AD) established Delhi as the imperial capital of the Delhi Sultanate. Prior to him, Qutbuddin Aibak had ruled from Lahore. Iltutmish also introduced purely Arabic coinage in the Sultanate, issuing the silver Tanka (175 grains) and the copper Jital, and introduced the practice of inscribing the mint town's name on coins.
