The medieval Chola Empire was founded in the 9th century AD by Vijayalaya (c. 850–871 AD), initially a feudatory of the Pallavas. Taking advantage of the conflict between the Pallavas and Pandyas, he captured Thanjavur (Tanjore) around 850 AD, erected a temple dedicated to Goddess Nishumbhasudini, and assumed the title of 'Narkesari'.
