महाबोधि मंदिर परिसर में स्थित वर्तमान बोधि वृक्ष मूल वृक्ष नहीं है। ह्वेनसांग के अनुसार मूल वृक्ष को 7वीं शताब्दी में गौड़ नरेश शशांक ने कटवाकर जलवा दिया था। इसके बाद अनेक बार वृक्ष रोपित किए गए। 1880 के दशक में भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण के तत्कालीन महानिदेशक सर अलेक्जेंडर कनिंघम ने अनुराधापुर (श्रीलंका) के मूल बोधिवृक्ष की शाखा से वर्तमान वृक्ष को रोपित कराया था। बिहार पर्यटन विभाग एवं कनिंघम के अनुसार यह 5वीं पीढ़ी का वृक्ष है, जबकि कुछ अन्य इतिहासकारों के अनुसार यह 6वीं पीढ़ी का है। ऐतिहासिक विवाद के कारण बिहार लोक सेवा आयोग ने इस प्रश्न को मूल्यांकन से बाहर कर दिया था।
The present sacred Bodhi tree at the Mahabodhi Temple is not the original tree under which the Buddha sat. The original tree was destroyed in the 7th century AD by King Shashanka of Gauda. The current specimen was planted in the late 19th century by Sir Alexander Cunningham from a sapling brought from Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka (which itself derived from the original Ashokan cutting). According to Cunningham and the Bihar State Tourism Department, it represents the 5th generation (though some scholars count 6th generation). Due to conflicting historical enumerations, BPSC cancelled this question.
