मौर्य युग में नगरों का प्रशासन नगरपालिकाओं द्वारा चलाया जाता था, जिसका प्रमुख 'नागरक' या 'पुरमुख्य' था। मेगस्थनीज ने पाटलिपुत्र के नगर परिषद की पांच-पांच सदस्यों वाली 6 समितियों का उल्लेख किया है। इनमें से तीसरी समिति जन्म-मृत्यु पंजीकरण का हिसाब रखती थी। वर्तमान में भी यह कार्य नगरपालिका प्रशासन द्वारा किया जाता है।
In the Mauryan era, the administration of cities was carried out by municipalities headed by a 'Nagrak' or 'Purmukhya'. Magasthenes has mentioned 6 committees of the city council with 5 members each. Among these, the third committee was tasked with keeping accounts of birth-death registration. At present also, this work is done by municipal administration.
