मेगस्थनीज ने अपनी पुस्तक इंडिका में भारतीय समाज को सात श्रेणियों में विभाजित किया है- (1) दार्शनिक, (2) कृषक, (3) पशुपालक, (4) शिल्पकार, (5) योद्धा, (6) निरीक्षक एवं (7) मंत्री एवं उपदेशक। मेगस्थनीज भारतीय समाज में दास प्रथा के प्रचलित होने का उल्लेख नहीं करता है। मौर्य काल में कोई भी व्यक्ति न तो अपनी जाति से बाहर विवाह कर सकता था और न ही उससे भिन्न पेशा ही अपना सकता था।
Megasthenes divided Mauryan society into seven categories which are as follows : (1) Philosophers (2) Farmers (3) Herdsmen (4) Artisans (5) Military (Soldier) (6) Overseers or Spies (7) Councillors and Assessors. Megasthenese does not mention slavery in India. According to him, no one could marry outside his caste, and no one could take to an occupation other than the one fixed for his caste according to the varna system.
