अशोक ने अपने राज्याभिषेक के बीस वर्ष बाद लुम्बिनी की यात्रा की तथा वहां एक शिलास्तंभ (रुम्मिनदेई लघु स्तंभ लेख) स्थापित किया। बुद्ध की जन्मभूमि होने के कारण लुम्बिनी ग्राम का 'बलि कर' माफ कर दिया तथा भू-राजस्व 1/6 से घटाकर 1/8 कर दिया।
Ashoka visited Lumbini after the 20th year of his coronation. To mark the birthplace of Buddha, the pillar at Rummindei was erected along with some sacred stone structure. He condoned the Bali tax of Lumbini as it was the birthplace of Buddha and reduced the rate of land revenue from 1/6 to 1/8.
