मौर्य साम्राज्य के संस्थापक चंद्रगुप्त मौर्य ने दक्षिण भारत की विजय प्राप्त की थी। इस संदर्भ में अशोक के अभिलेखों, जैन एवं तमिल साक्ष्यों से जानकारी प्राप्त होती है। दक्षिण भाग के अनेक स्थलों में अशोक के अभिलेख प्राप्त हुए हैं; किंतु अशोक ने एकमात्र कलिंग विजय ही की थी। अतः ऐसी स्थिति में दक्षिण में विजय का श्रेय हमें चंद्रगुप्त मौर्य को ही देना पड़ेगा; क्योंकि बिंदुसार की विजय अत्यंत संदिग्ध है एवं इतिहास में उसे एक विजेता के रूप में स्मरण नहीं किया जाता। जैन एवं तमिल साक्ष्य भी चंद्रगुप्त मौर्य की दक्षिण विजय की पुष्टि करते हैं।
The founder of the Mauryan dynasty, Chandragupta Maurya conquered the Deccan plateau. Jain and Tamil sources inscriptions found at various sites of southern India proved that Chandragupta Maurya expanded his empire into Deccan trap. Inscriptions of Ashoka were also found from many sites of the southern part of India, but he conquered the Kalinga only. In this situation, Chandragupta should be given the credit of Deccan Victory as Victory of Bindusara is doubtful and history never remembered him as a victor.
