चाणक्य का अन्य नाम था-

ऋषि चणक ने अपने पुत्र का नाम चाणक्य रखा था। 'अर्थशास्त्र' के लेखक के रूप में इसी पुस्तक में उल्लिखित 'कौटिल्य' तथा एक पद्यखंड में उल्लिखित 'विष्णुगुप्त' नाम की साम्यता चाणक्य से की जाती है। पुराणों में उसे 'द्विजर्षभ' (श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण) कहा गया है। प्रश्न में बचपन के नाम की बात कही गई है। चाणक्य पर विशेष अध्ययन करने वाले विद्वान ट्रॉटमैन के अनुसार, चाणक्य तथा कौटिल्य नाम चाणक्य के गोत्र-नाम हो सकते हैं। इसी प्रकार अनेक विद्वानों ने यह निष्कर्ष निर्गत किया है कि चाणक्य तथा विष्णुगुप्त एवं कौटिल्य अलग-अलग व्यक्ति हैं। आयोग ने इस प्रश्न का उत्तर विष्णुगुप्त अपनी वेबसाइट पर प्रदर्शित किया था। इसके अनुसार विकल्प (c) विष्णुगुप्त सही उत्तर होगा।

Sage Chanak gave his son the name Chanakya. The ancient Arthashastra has been traditionally attributed to Chanakya by a number of scholars. Arthashastra identifies its author by the name of Kautilya, except for one verse that refers to him by the name of Vishnugupta.
