राजा नंद का उल्लेख करने वाला अभिलेखीय प्रमाण है-

कलिंग के चेदि वंश का सबसे प्रतापी शासक खारवेल था। इसके विषय में जानकारी का प्रमुख स्रोत इसका हाथीगुम्फा अभिलेख है। नंद वंशीय शासक महापद्मनंद द्वारा कलिंग में नहर खुदवाए जाने का उल्लेख इस अभिलेख में किया गया है; अर्थात यह नहरों की जानकारी देने वाला प्रथम अभिलेखीय साक्ष्य है।

Kharvel was the most important emperor of Chedi dynasty of Kalinga. His Hathigumpha inscription is the major source of information about his reign. The engraving of canals in Kalinga by King Mahapadmananda is encrypted in this inscription. It is also the first inscription which tells about the engraving of canals. It mentions the donation of villages to Jain monks. This inscription also mentions that Kharvel defeated the three states Chola, Chera, and Pandyas of the south.
