भूमिस्पर्श मुद्रा की सारनाथ की बुद्ध मूर्ति गुप्त काल से संबंधित है। इसकी आध्यात्मिक अभिव्यक्ति, गंभीर मुस्कान एवं शांत ध्यानमग्न मुद्रा भारतीय कला की सर्वोच्च सफलता का प्रदर्शन करती है।

The Bhumisparsha Mudra of Gautama Buddha at Sarnath belongs to the Gupta period. This mudra represents steadfastness. The “Dhyani Buddha Akshobhya” is also associated with the earth witness mudra because he was immovable in keeping a vow never to feel anger or disgust at others. The mudra also symbolizes the union of skilful means (upaya), symbolized by the right hand touching the earth and wisdom (prajna), symbolized by the left hand on the lap in a meditation posture.
