कुषाण काल में ही गांधार एवं मथुरा कला शैली के तहत बुद्ध एवं बोधिसत्वों की बहुसंख्यक मूर्तियों का (बैठी एवं खड़ी स्थिति में) निर्माण हुआ। वी.एस. अग्रवाल के मतानुसार, सर्वप्रथम मथुरा में ही बुद्ध मूर्तियों का निर्माण किया गया, जहां इनके लिए पर्याप्त आधार था। ह्वेनसांग के विवरण के अनुसार बुद्ध की प्रथम प्रतिमा कौशाम्बी में बनी थी, परंतु अनेक विद्वान महात्मा बुद्ध की प्रथम प्रतिमा के निर्माण का श्रेय गांधार कला को देते हैं। अतः निश्चित तौर पर यह नहीं कहा जा सकता कि बुद्ध की प्रथम प्रतिमा कहां बनी।
During the Kushana period various statues of Buddha and Bodhisattva (both in standing and sitting position) were made in Mathura and Gandhara styles. As per V.S. Agrawal, Buddha statues were first made in Mathura only. As per Huein Tsang, first Buddha's statue was made in Kaushambi, but various other historian gives credit to Gandhara style for first statue of Buddha. Hence it can not be said conclusively where first statue of Buddha was made.
