बोधगया में 'बोधि वृक्ष' अपने वंश की इस पीढ़ी का है-

महाबोधि मंदिर में स्थित वर्तमान बोधि वृक्ष वही नहीं है, जिसके नीचे बैठकर महात्मा बुद्ध ने ज्ञान प्राप्त किया था। ह्वेनसांग के अनुसार, उस मूल वृक्ष को सातवीं शताब्दी में सम्राट शशांक ने नष्ट करा दिया था। वर्तमान वृक्ष जिसे हम देख रहे हैं वह पांचवीं पीढ़ी का वृक्ष है, जिसे अलेक्जेंडर कनिंघम ने लगवाया था। यह वृक्ष पूरी तरह संरक्षित है और केवल इससे गिरी हुई पत्तियों को ही छूने एवं उठाने का अधिकार है।

At present, the ‘Bodhi Vriksha’ at the Mahabodhi temple is not the real one, where Mahatma Buddha got the enlightenment. According to the Hiuen Tsang, a Chinese traveller, king Shashank destroyed the original tree in the seventh century. The present tree that we see was planted by the orders of Alexander Cunningham and is called the fifth generation tree. It is a heritage site and only fallen leaves of this tree are allowed to touch and pick.
