प्रथम बौद्ध संगीति बुद्ध की मृत्यु के तत्काल बाद मगध नरेश अजातशत्रु के कार्यकाल में राजगृह (राजगीर) स्थित सप्तपर्णि गुफा में संपन्न हुई थी। द्वितीय बौद्ध संगीति का आयोजन कालाशोक के शासनकाल में बुद्ध की मृत्यु के 100 वर्ष बाद वैशाली में किया गया था। तृतीय बौद्ध संगीति मौर्य सम्राट अशोक के शासनकाल में पाटलिपुत्र में हुई थी। मोग्गलिपुत्त तिस्स इसके अध्यक्ष थे। चतुर्थ बौद्ध संगीति कनिष्क के शासनकाल में कुंडलवन (कश्मीर) में संपन्न हुई थी। इसकी अध्यक्षता वसुमित्र एवं उपाध्यक्षता अश्वघोष ने की।
The first Buddhist council was held soon after the death of Buddha under the patronage of King Ajatashatru with the monk Mahakassapa presiding at Saptaparni Cave at Rajgriha. The second council took place during the reign of Kalasoka after 100 years of Buddha’s death in Vaishali and was presided over by Sabakami. The third council was held during the reign of Ashoka at Pataliputra, and the fourth council was held during the reign of Kanishka at Kashmir (Kundalavana).
