मौर्य वंशीय शासक अशोक के रुम्मिनदेई अभिलेख से सूचना मिलती है कि शाक्यमुनि बुद्ध का जन्म लुम्बिनी में हुआ था। इस अभिलेख के अनुसार, अशोक राज्याभिषेक के 20 वर्ष बाद यहां आया था और उसने उस स्थान की पूजा की थी, जहां शाक्यमुनि बुद्ध का जन्म हुआ था। साथ ही इस अभिलेख में लुंबिनी के बुद्ध का जन्म स्थल होने के कारण इसे बलि कर से मुक्त घोषित किया गया तथा भूराजस्व कर केवल उपज का 1/8 भाग लेने की घोषणा की गई।
From the Mauryan dynasty emperor Ashoka’s Rummindei Pillar inscription, it is known that Lumbini is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha. According to this inscription King Ashoka came here (Lumbini) after the 20th year of his coronation and worshipped the place where Shakyamuni was born. In addition to that, he also exempted Lumbini from Bali tax and was asked to pay only an eighth share of the produce as it was the birthplace of Gautam Buddha.
