गौतम बुद्ध का जन्म कपिलवस्तु के निकट लुम्बिनी में 563 ई. पू. में हुआ था। उनके पिता शुद्धोधन शाक्यगण के प्रधान थे तथा माता माया देवी कोलिय गणराज्य (कोलिय वंश) की कन्या थीं। 29 वर्ष की अवस्था में उन्होंने गृह त्याग दिया, जिसे बौद्ध ग्रंथों में 'महाभिनिष्क्रमण' की संज्ञा दी गई।
Gautama Buddha, also known as Siddhartha (childhood name), was born in 563 B.C. in Shakya Kshatriya family in Lumbini near Kapilvastu (Nepal). His father’s name was Shuddhodana who was the chief of the Shakya clan. His mother was Mayadevi who was from the ‘Koliya clan.’ At the age of 29, he left his home on his horse “Kanthaka” accompanied by Channa and this was called “Mahabhinishkramana”. He died at the age of 80 years in 483 B.C. at Kushinagar (the first capital city of Malla Kingdom) which is known as “Mahaparinirvana”.
