धर्मशास्त्रों के समय में (सूत्र काल में) चार वर्णों (ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, वैश्य एवं शूद्र) के अतिरिक्त समाज में अन्य अनेक जातियों यथा-अम्बष्ठ, उग्र, निषाद, मागध, वैदेहक, रथकार आदि का आविर्भाव अनुलोम एवं प्रतिलोम विवाहों के फलस्वरूप हो गया। पाणिनि ने दो प्रकार के शूद्रों का उल्लेख किया है-निरवसित एवं अनिरवसित। इनमें पहले प्रकार के शूद्र ही अस्पृश्य माने जाते थे।
The concept of untouchability assumed definite shape in the early Christian era which was the period known as the era of Dharmashastra in ancient Indian history. During this period, the Brahmanical religion was in ascendance. Various scriptures were being written and the social customs of different types were practised strictly and untouchability was one of them.
