Sir William Henry Sleeman (W.H. Sleeman) was a British colonial administrator and army officer renowned for suppressing the Thuggee cult under Lord William Bentinck. Appointed British Resident at Lucknow in 1848, he surveyed the kingdom and compiled the detailed report 'A Journey through the Kingdom of Oude in the Years 1849-1850' (published in 2 volumes in London, 1858). This and Outram's subsequent report served as the basis for Lord Dalhousie's annexation of Awadh on grounds of misgovernance in 1856.
