The catastrophic Bengal Famine occurred in 1943 during the Second World War. Triggered by the cessation of rice imports following the Japanese occupation of Burma, widespread hoarding, catastrophic administrative failures, and the deliberate redirection of grain supplies by the British wartime administration under Winston Churchill, an estimated 2.5 to 3 million people perished from starvation and related epidemics.
