Following the launch of the Quit India Movement on 9 August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, Mahadev Desai, and Sarojini Naidu were detained at the Aga Khan Palace in Pune. During this internment, Gandhi's lifelong personal secretary Mahadev Desai died of a heart attack on 15 August 1942, and Kasturba Gandhi passed away on 22 February 1944.
