Aruna Asaf Ali (1909–1996), renowned for hoisting the national flag at Gowalia Tank Maidan during the 1942 Quit India Movement, played a pioneering role in post-independence Indian politics. She co-founded the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) in 1954, joined the Communist Party of India in 1955, served as the first elected Mayor of Delhi in 1958, and launched progressive publications including 'The Patriot' and 'Link'. She was posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna in 1997.
