Ambabai was a prominent freedom fighter from the Udupi region of Karnataka (then within the princely state of Mysore/Madras Presidency). Widowed at the early age of twelve, she defied social orthodoxy to join the national movement. She organized picketing of foreign cloth and liquor shops in Udupi, led public demonstrations, participated vigorously in the Salt Satyagraha of 1930, and was imprisoned multiple times.
