Mahatma Gandhi established the Satyagraha Ashram in May 1915 at Kochrab in Ahmedabad. Later, due to a plague outbreak and to accommodate farming and hand-spinning, he relocated the ashram to the banks of the Sabarmati River on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on 17 June 1917.
