Aurobindo Ghosh was a leading ideologue and leader of the Extremist faction of the Congress, forming the core along with Lal-Bal-Pal. In 1893–94, he wrote his celebrated critique New Lamps for Old. Arrested in connection with the Alipore Bomb Case in 1908, he was defended by C.R. Das and acquitted, after which he retired to Pondicherry to pursue spiritual life. Dadabhai Naoroji, G.K. Gokhale, and S.N. Banerjee were moderates.
