Surendranath Banerjee passed the ICS examination in 1869. After resolving an age discrepancy, he was appointed Assistant Magistrate at Sylhet (now in Bangladesh). In 1874, he was dismissed from the service on grounds of a trivial procedural error, following which he plunged full-time into nationalist politics.
