Narayan Meghaji Lokhande (1848–1897 CE) is widely recognized as the pioneer and father of the organized labour movement in India. An associate of Jyotirao Phule's Satyashodhak Samaj, Lokhande founded the 'Bombay Mill-Hands Association' in 1890, regarded as India's first labour association. He spearheaded historic demands for weekly Sunday holidays, fixed working hours, and meal breaks for textile workers, and edited the working-class newspaper 'Deenbandhu'. In 2005, the Government of India released a commemorative postal stamp in his honour.
