In the late 19th century, social reformer Govind Giri (Govind Guru), along with Surji Bhagat, pioneered the 'Lasodia Movement' (Bhagat Movement) for the moral and social upliftment of the Bhil tribes in Mewar, Vagad (Dungarpur, Banswara), and Sirohi in Rajasthan. In 1883 CE, Govind Giri established the 'Samp Sabha' to foster tribal unity and purge social evils. In 1913, British forces massacred hundreds of peaceful Bhils assembled at Mangarh Hill (the Mangarh massacre).
