The Khond (Khond) tribe inhabited the hilly tracts extending from Odisha to Bengal and Central India. When the British government, under Lord Hardinge I, established the specialized 'Meriah Agency' under Captain Macpherson and Campbell to aggressively suppress the traditional tribal rite of 'Meriah' (human sacrifice), the Khonds revolted fiercely from 1846 to 1855 under the leadership of Chakra Bisoi. The imposition of new colonial taxes and exploitation by moneylenders further fueled their rebellion.
