In 1805, the ruler of Travancore (Kerala) was compelled by Lord Wellesley into a Subsidiary Alliance. In protest against the crushing financial subsidies and aggressive internal meddling by the British Resident Colonel Macaulay, Dalawa Velu Thampi (the Prime Minister of Travancore) raised a major rebellion in 1808–1809. In January 1809, he issued the historic 'Kundara Proclamation', calling upon the people to take up arms against British rule.
