The Faraizi movement was initiated in eastern Bengal (Faridpur) by Haji Shariatullah. His son Muhsinuddin Ahmad, popularly known as 'Dadu Mian', transformed this religious sect into a militant agrarian and anti-British struggle against oppressive zamindars and indigo planters. Dadu Mian declared that 'all land belongs to God' and therefore no rent or tax could be imposed on it.
