Pagalpanth was a semi-religious sect founded in northern Bengal (Mymensingh/Sherpur) by Karam Shah. The uprising was essentially a peasant rebellion of the Garo and Hajong tribes against the extortionate rent and oppressions of local zamindars. Karam Shah's son and successor Tipu led the armed struggle and captured Sherpur in 1825, running an autonomous parallel administration.
