Immediately after the Revolt of 1857, the Indigo Revolt (1859–60 CE) erupted in Bengal. The Sanyasi Rebellion occurred in 1763–1800 CE, the Santhal Rebellion in 1855–56 CE, and the Pabna agrarian uprising in 1873–76 CE. The Indigo Revolt began in the Nadia district under the leadership of Bishnu Charan Biswas and Digambar Biswas. Bengali intellectuals strongly championed the cause, notably Harish Chandra Mukherjee through his newspaper 'The Hindoo Patriot' and Dinabandhu Mitra through his acclaimed play 'Neel Darpan'.
