29 मार्च, 1857 को बैरकपुर (पश्चिम बंगाल) की सैनिक छावनी में 34वीं बंगाल नेटिव इन्फैंट्री के सिपाही मंगल पांडेय ने चर्बी वाले कारतूसों के प्रयोग का खुला विरोध करते हुए विद्रोह कर दिया। उन्होंने अपने अंग्रेज सार्जेंट-मेजर जेम्स ह्यूसन तथा लेफ्टिनेंट एडजुडेंट हेनरी बॉघ पर गोली चलाई और उन्हें घायल कर दिया। बाद में मंगल पांडेय को गिरफ्तार कर 8 अप्रैल, 1857 को फांसी दे दी गई।
On March 29, 1857, at the Barrackpore military cantonment in Bengal, sepoy Mangal Pandey of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry mutinied against using greased cartridges. He shot at and wounded his superior British officers, Sergeant-Major James Thornton Hewson and Lieutenant Baugh. Mangal Pandey was court-martialled and executed on April 8, 1857.
