In December 1856, the British military administration decided to replace the outdated smoothbore 'Brown Bess' musket with the rifled, more accurate 'Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle'. To load the new cartridge, sepoys had to bite off the greased paper wrapper. In January 1857, reports spread at Dum Dum that the grease contained a mixture of tallow derived from cows (sacred to Hindus) and lard from pigs (abhorrent to Muslims). This religious outrage became the direct immediate spark for the Revolt of 1857.
