22/23 अक्टूबर, 1764 को अंग्रेजों (मेजर हेक्टर मुनरो के नेतृत्व में) ने मीर कासिम, अवध के नवाब शुजाउद्दौला तथा दिल्ली के मुगल सम्राट शाह आलम द्वितीय की संयुक्त सेना को बक्सर के युद्ध में परास्त किया। इस युद्ध ने प्लासी के अनिर्णीत निर्णयों पर मुहर लगा दी। पी.ई. रॉबर्ट्स ने लिखा है कि 'प्लासी की अपेक्षा बक्सर को भारत में अंग्रेजी प्रभुता की जन्मभूमि मानना कहीं अधिक उपयुक्त है।' बक्सर की विजय ने कंपनी को एक अखिल भारतीय शक्ति के रूप में स्थापित किया।
On 22/23 October 1764, the British forces under Major Hector Munro defeated the combined armies of Mir Qasim, Nawab Shuja-ud-Daulah of Awadh, and Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II at the Battle of Buxar. This battle confirmed the gains of Plassey and established de facto British supremacy. Historian P.E. Roberts noted that 'Buxar rather than Plassey must be regarded as the origin of British rule in India.'
