Afonso de Albuquerque (1509–1515 CE) was the true founder of Portuguese territorial power in the East. In November 1510 CE, he conquered Goa from the Adil Shahi Sultan of Bijapur, transforming it into the naval and administrative hub of the Estado da Índia. He established fortress bases controlling maritime choke-points at Malacca (1511 CE) and Ormuz (1515 CE), abolished Sati in Goa, and encouraged mixed marriages with Indian women.
